Around the year 1213, and thus over 800 years ago, the Regensburg bishop Konrad IV, together with the citizens, acquired a plot of land at the northern end of the Stone Bridge in order to build a hospital there, a hospital for the poor.

The location promised better air, fresh water and more amenities in general. The document preserved about this memorable event also sheds light on the ruling relationships in Regensburg at the time. Bishop Konrad IV had just ousted the Bavarian Duke Ludwig the Kelheimer from the city and cooperated with the Regensburg citizens on the hospital project, who managed the bridge assets and thus also the required land.
