Tips

  • Sights in Regensburg
Regensburg, the “medieval wonder of Germany”, was added to the UNESCO list as a world cultural heritage site in July 2006. The city founded by the Romans with its almost 2,000-year history offers its visitors unique impressions. There are almost a thousand monuments to discover in the old town alone.
Regensburg was a politically central place in Europe for centuries. In the “Perpetual Reichstag” in Regensburg, European political history was written at a time when the term “European Union” had not yet been invented.
The convenient location on the Danube also had a very positive effect on the city's economic development. In the Middle Ages, Regensburg merchant families maintained business relationships from Paris to Kiev. The city became very wealthy through long-distance trade. The rich patricians created impressive buildings that still shape the cityscape today.
St. Peter's Cathedral, the Stone Bridge, St. Emmeram Castle, the old town with its winding streets, all of this makes Regensburg a unique, world-class treasure chest.

  • This square is neither the largest nor the most beautiful, but it houses the old town hall and the Ratskeller!

  • In the middle of the old town on the way between the coal market and Haidplatz extends between narrow streets of the town hall square. From the 13th century, the Regensburgers built the building complex of today's "Old Town Hall" on this central market, which was rebuilt over and over again over the centuries. Today roughly three different architectural components can be recognized. In the heart of the complex is the oldest member of the former patrician castle with the tall, until today imposing town hall tower from the middle of the 13th century with the slightly younger residential wing and the adjacent courtyard. To the west of this, the 14th-century Reichssaalanbau extends to the town clerk's house, on the ground floor of which various shops sell their wares. East of the old patrician castle you can see the Baroque new building of the town hall, which was built in the 17th and 18th centuries. This tract of the town hall complex has served as the municipal administrative building since the establishment of the Perpetual Treasury in 1663. The richly decorated market clock tower, which towered far above the surrounding roofs on this wing of the town hall and was considered one of the landmarks of Regensburg, unfortunately no longer exists after a severe fire in 1706 today.tourismus.regensburg.de/regensburg-erleben/sehenswertes/alle-sehenswuerdigkeiten/plaetze/rathausplatz.html
