The current state border between Bavaria and Thuringia is just 600 m away. During the GDR era, there was a 5 km wide restricted zone in front of Bockstadt. To enter the town, you needed a permit, which even the post office required. In 1975, soldier Werner Weinhold shot two other border guards while fleeing. After the incident, Bockstadt was swarming with police and soldiers.
