This area memorial is an atonement cross. Atonement crosses are field monuments, or area memorials, because in the past they were erected at places where someone unexpectedly died. These crosses were intended to assist the dead in purgatory and to call passersby to prayer. Thus, they are not simply stone crosses, but also a testament to a particular legal and religious conception in the Middle Ages. The detailed history can be read on the information board.

The area memorial formerly consisted of the cross and a large, conspicuous tree that was still there at the time.
