In the southern Harz Mountains between Bad Lauterberg and Scharzfeld are the ruins of Frauenstein Castle on a single dolomite cliff. The elevated and strategically important position of the rock made it an important observation post as early as the Middle Ages. It was primarily used to provide additional security for Scharzfels Castle, which is about 300 meters to the south-west.
The Frauensteinklippe was probably expanded into a fortress in the first half of the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War. She took up the entire hilltop. Its floor area was about 25 by 30 meters. After the capitulation of the garrison of Scharzfels Castle during the Seven Years' War in 1761, French troops blew up Frauenstein Castle along with the neighboring fortifications.
Hardly anything remains of the castle buildings. Some remains of the moat, the rampart and parts of the cellar can still be seen today. See: harzlife.de
