The people of Münster called Strontianite "Strunz", a mineral that was of crucial importance for the production of sugar from sugar beets in the second half of the 19th century. The only region in which Strontianite was found in such quantity and quality that it was used for mining The area in question was southern Münsterland. Around 1870, numerous landowners opened small and large mines in Ascheberg, Drensteinfurt and the surrounding area, which only a few people know about today.

With 183 pits, Drensteinfurt was the main town for strontianite mining. The Villa Schmitt, built in 1908, still bears witness to the prosperity of some mine owners.
Symbols of mining can be found in the beautiful floor mosaic in the entrance area and in the relief on the front door.

      Among other things, successful shift.
Associated with this greeting is also the wish that the buddy comes out of the pit healthy.
