A Lakeland legend and often thought of as the birthplace of British climbing, Great Gable is quite some mountain. Much of the mountaineering interest is clustered around the Napes, on its south-facing flanks.

The summit is home to a memorial to the members of the Fell and Rock Climbing Club who passed away during the First World War. Huge numbers of people ascend to the summit every Remembrance Day to pay their respects.
