The forest chapel has been Buggenhout's most famous monument for centuries. This 500 year old baroque chapel was built according to legend by Jacoba van Heffene to commemorate her husband Jan De Rijcke. He shot next to a wild boar during a hunting party, after which the animal turned on him. A memorial plaque in the chapel tells the story of the fateful accident.

De Boskapel is dedicated to Our Lady of Distress and is still today a place of rest and reflection. Around the chapel is a 15-station walk of rock sculptures.

For the past two years, the annual religious prayer novena Our Lady of Sorrows, better known as Bosbegankenis, has been organized at the forest chapel at the beginning of May. This is linked to a folk festival with all kinds of activities.
