On the Fisherman's Day, June 1, 2008, the outdoor art piece Hringrás was inaugurated on a plot of land at the Hospital and the Infirmary in Akranes. The work is by the visual artist Inga Ragnarsdóttir (b. 1955). The work was chosen after a competition organized by the Union of Icelandic Visual Artists. Inga graduated from the Icelandic School of Art and Handicrafts in 1977, but then went on to study at the Academy in Munich, from where she graduated with a Diploma in 1987. After graduation, she was given a project to do outdoor work in the old university district of Schwabing in Munich, but since then she has mostly lived in Germany. The work is a waterworks in two parts. On the one hand there is a four-meter high, split column with four plinths, with four waterfalls cascading down between the plinths, and on the other hand a snail that circles the water flow as it flows down into the strata again into the eternal cycle of water. The pillar is located in a small square pond, while the snail is in a larger pond that is circular and between the ponds is a stream. The work is cast in bronze, but the ponds are laid in sea rock with a concrete frame around.
