At Akratorg, the Sailor is named after Martein Guðmundsson, who was born in 1905 and died in 1952. Martein studied both in Iceland and in Paris and Copenhagen. The artwork was unveiled in 1967 by Lilja Pálsdóttir, wife of Sér Jón M. Guðjónsson, priest and provost in Akranes, and is erected in memory of drowned sailors. On the base is a passage from the poem Sjómannasangur by Steingrím Thorsteinsson; A sailor's life in the hands of the lord / sanctified foster ground. Martein's daughter is a Steinunn artist in Hulduhólum in Mosfellsbær and a town artist there in 2003. The Sailor is located on Akratorg in the center of Akraness, but Akratorg was renovated in 2014 and therefore stands as Sjómaður on a new, elegant square.
