Formatted by the volcanic eruptions, Skaros used to be the most important of the five fortified settlements, inhabited in medieval times. It was the capital of Santorini until the 18th century, with two fortresses and over 200 houses. Nowadays it is totally uninhabited with the exception of a small church, the Chapel of Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis, on its north side. Only a few ruins are left from the formerly numerous dwellings.

Incredibly romantic sunset, considerably less crowded than Oia, with panoramic view 360°. Comfortable walking shoes recommended.

The path to the rock is worth it. Impressive views and wonderful peace. In the past, Skaros had a fortress at the top and served as a watchtower. According to historical data, the fortress was not conquered due to its height and difficult access from the sea. A strong earthquake in the mid-20th century destroyed everything on Skaros and today the only building you can see there is the small church of Theοskеpasti.
