In these layers, a puddle-dras situation is present in combination with small islands. This makes this area very valuable as a breeding and foraging area for marsh, meadow and coastal birds. Birds foraging in the Oosterschelde also emerge in the inlays and inlays have an important function as a high-tide refuge. Species such as silver plover, curlew, bar-tailed godwit, dunlin and knot wait in densely packed masses for a favorable tide. These inlays with surrounding cart fields have traditionally been among the best breeding areas for redshank and avocet in the Netherlands.
