Church and secular buildings from many centuries, located on both banks of the Salzach and surrounded by the city's mountains, form the unique Salzburg World Heritage ensemble. Since December 1996, when UNESCO added the historic old town of Salzburg to the list of World Heritage sites, the World Heritage core zone has covered 237 hectares of the city, protected by the buffer zone with an area of 467 hectares. Almost a thousand objects with a history from the Middle Ages to the present day are located in this area; around half of the buildings are also listed buildings. The city of Salzburg already recognized its responsibility towards its architectural heritage in the 1960s of the 20th century. On the one hand, it was the committed citizens and on the other hand the city's politics that contributed to the adoption of the Salzburg Old Town Preservation Act in 1967 - the first of its kind in Austria. The protection of the world cultural heritage is now also legally anchored as an objective in the city's constitution. Also on a legal basis, in 2017 the old town protection zone including the Wilhelminian period areas was aligned with the core area of the World Heritage zone.
