In 1781, the penultimate Prince-Abbot Jacques de Hubin (1705-1786) had an obelisk erected on the former market square, today's Place Albert Ier. With around 500 guilders, he financed both the construction of the pointed column and the affixing of his coat of arms and his motto "Fluvius Pacis".
However, these inscriptions were removed during the French Revolution. On April 17, 1781, the fountain was finally put into operation. The water was reserved for the population and was not allowed to be used for drinking troughs or for washing clothes. Today the fountain fulfills a more decorative function.
