The street "La Vaulx" is the oldest street in Malmedy. A walk there takes you past many well-preserved half-timbered houses. They impress with their slate cladding and countless picturesque mountain gardens. For centuries, the La Vaulx street was the heart of the city, where much of everyday life took place. The first mentions of the street "Haute Vaulx" date back to 1601 - a time that was mainly characterized by the fortification of the city. The houses on this street - luxurious houses of the bourgeoisie - date from shortly after the city was almost completely destroyed in 1689. Some of the oldest houses in the city can also be admired in the Outrelepont district. But the houses are not everything. The many squares, alleys, dead ends, villas and residential buildings also contribute significantly to the charm and charisma of Malmedy.

Since the first monks found their way to Malmedy in 648, destruction and reconstruction have been part of the city's daily routine. Just think of the Norman invasion in 881. In 954 the Hungarians followed suit and in 1587 Martin Schenk began his raid through the area. The troops under Louis XIV caused severe destruction in 1689 and the bombings around 1944 left almost nothing but rubble. Despite these serious setbacks, the city has managed to preserve some of its authenticity, as some of the city's oldest quarters prove.
