From 1815 (Congress of Vienna) to 1920 (Treaty of Versailles), Malmedy was part of the Prussian Rhine Province and seat of the Malmedy district administration. In 1920, Malmedy, together with Eupen and Sankt Vith, became part of the Kingdom of Belgium (see East Belgium). When it belonged to the German Empire, the official language was German, but the everyday language of a large minority of the region's population (28.7% in 1900) was French or Walloon, a Gallo-Roman dialect.
