In the area of the rocky hiking region in the Bavarian Forest National Park, the entire surroundings of the Kleine Kanzel are littered with gneiss cliffs and blocks. South of the Kleine Kanzel on the hiking trail, there is a beautiful outcrop of strongly folded metatectic to anatectic cordierite gneiss with inclusions of calcsilicate rock. The current morphological appearance is the result of the Pleistocene erosion of the weathering covers and the associated rock exposure. Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU).
