Our ancestors called Hohe Strasse, based on the concept of road in Roman times, traffic routes for overcoming mountain regions that bypassed impassable, dangerous valleys and mainly led over ridges.
Such a road once led from the Werra valley to northern Thuringia over the heights of Metzels, Christes and the Rennsteig near Rotterode.

Remains of the pavement from the Middle Ages can still be found everywhere on the hiking trail, which indicate that it was used as a trade route. This pavement has survived the centuries and endured climate and usage. So you are walking on historical ground.
