In September 2023, Hamburg's youngest church, the Franz von Assisi Church in Neuallermöhe, turned 30 years old. The foundation stone for today's church was laid in 1991 and it was inaugurated two years later. And even though the church is still so young:

The church, built according to plans by Bergedorf architect Nils Roderjan, is already a monument.

Because even if it looks quite traditional from the outside, with its brick walls and tower, the real heart opens up inside. Flooded with light, no benches, walls can be retracted if necessary. In this way, the church continually adapts to people and their needs. On the gallery there is a bar and a large table. This is where people eat, talk, live and where the parish council meets.

A special eye-catcher is the “Window of Mercy” in the chancel. It comes from the St. Nikolai Church on the Hopfenmarkt, which was destroyed by Operation Gomorrah.

The construction of the church in what was then Hamburg-Allermöhe is related to the emergence of new housing estates (Neu-Allermöhe East and West) in the 1980s and 1990s. The church should fit structurally into the architectural context and at the same time set its own accent. After the congregational work began in a construction trailer in 1986, the foundation stone for the church was laid in 1991. The building, designed by architect Nils Roderjan, was completed in 1993 and inaugurated on October 3 of that year. During the construction period, the copper-clad, pointed, 40 m high spire was transported as a finished component from Segeberg to Bergedorf and placed on the brick tower base by crane.
