    Tips

Although the sandy beach and water of Eichbaumsee are tempting, swimming is prohibited. The reason for this is the health risk posed by recurring, potentially toxic blue-green algae. Furthermore, ongoing investigations are being carried out on the lake.

The lake is fed by groundwater. It was created between 1972 and 1976 by sand mining from a tributary of the Dove-Elbe River. Two bathing areas with sandy beaches and lawns are located to the north and east of the lake.

Caution: There are cliffs near the shore where the water suddenly becomes very deep. This is typical of a gravel pit. In Eichbaumsee, massive growth of toxic blue-green algae often occurs in summer. In recent years, extensive remediation measures have been carried out to preserve the lake as a long-term bathing area.

The Eichbaumsee offers many beautiful photo opportunities and cooling off on warm summer days

Eichbaumsee is picturesquely situated directly on the Elbe River in Hamburg's Allermöhe district.

The hiking trails and parks surrounding the lake invite you to hike, stroll, and relax. At Eichbaumsee, you'll find plenty of nature and space to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. You can have a picnic, sunbathe on the beach, or walk your dog, who is even allowed to run free here in some places. The combination of lake and Elbe River is truly magnificent.

Eichbaumsee is perfect for a trip to Hamburg's southeast and its idyllic marshlands. You won't even feel like you're still in Hamburg.

Large bathing areas with sandy beaches await you on the northeast shore of Eichbaumsee. Unfortunately, swimming has been prohibited here for several years. Unfortunately, the lake is infested with harmful blue-green algae. Despite several remediation measures by the city, the popular bathing lake has not yet been reopened for swimming.

But you don't have to miss out on cooling off on hot summer days. Swimming is permitted in the Elbe River. This 18-kilometer-long tributary of the Elbe meanders idyllically through the Vierlande and Marschlande areas. Thanks to the Tatenberg Lock, the Elbe River has no tides and a very low flow rate. Great for swimming.

But be careful! There are also many boats and canoes on the Elbe River.

This lower branch of the Elbe is also a perfect spot for paddlers.
