The village is one of the oldest settlements in the district of Göppingen, assuming it was first mentioned in historical written sources. "Mulenhuson" was mentioned as early as 861 in the founding document of the Wiesensteig monastery. The place name contains the Old High German term "muli" for mill, which in turn goes back to "mul" for crushed. The "-hausen" ending indicates that the settlement already existed in the 7th century, i.e. at least 200 years before it was first mentioned. According to the place name, Mühlhausen developed in the vicinity of one or more mills that were operated here on the Fils.
