At the mouth of the Schlei in the Baltic Sea there is a nature reserve on the northern side. This primarily serves to protect the birds that breed there. The "Schleimündung" nature reserve is also closed to hikers and cyclists and can only be reached by boat. As part of the excursions from Kappeln, a bird guide is offered during the short stay.
