The depiction of Christ in the wine press goes back to symbolic ideas that have their origins in the Bible. According to the classical allegorical interpretation of the Bible, the Church Fathers saw in the squeezed wine the blood of Christ, or in the pressed grape Christ himself, who as the head of the church was first squeezed out as a noble grape.

Hiking

Every year, in May, there is an ecumenical pilgrimage, starting from Unter- and Obereisenheim. The pilgrims from both districts meet at the Breite Weg, Hertleinsweg junction, in order to reach their destination "Christ in the wine press" singing and praying. The pilgrimage ends with a more or less long, cozy get-together.

The first ecumenical pilgrimage took place on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of the Eisenheim market in 1988. So there has been an ecumenical movement in Eisenheim for many years.
