Friesenpark is a large pit. The sports field to the north is also part of it. Material for dike construction was excavated from here.

In 2024 and 2025, the dike in Homberg was relocated. During floods, 16,000 m³ per second flow past here between East Duisburg and Homberg and Rheinhausen. If the riverbed were a little wider, the floodwaters would not spill into Duisburg's city center as quickly.

From there, the floodwater could flow to Walsum via the subway and sewer system. Due to coal mining, Walsum lies in a mountain depression (15 m above sea level).
