Friesenpark is a large pit. The sports field to the north is also part of it. Material for dike construction was excavated from here.

The surrounding area is approximately 28 to 30 m above sea level, the Lower Rhine Terrace. The sports field and park are 15 m above sea level. The average water level of the Rhine in Duisburg is 20 m below sea level (up to 30 m above sea level during floods).

Because the people of Homberg agreed to the "hole," a new sports field with a clubhouse and the development of the park were paid for.

In 2024 and 2025, the dike in Homberg was relocated. During floods, 16,000 m³ per second flow past here between East Duisburg and Homberg and Rheinhausen. If the riverbed were a little wider, the floodwaters would not spill into Duisburg's city center as quickly.

From there, the floodwater could flow to Walsum via the subway and sewer system. Due to coal mining, Walsum lies in a mountain depression (15 m above sea level).
