The Bernauer Heerstraße was a medieval road connection between the former Spandau Castle (later: Spandau Citadel) and the town of Bernau on the edge of the Barnim, from where it continued to Oderberg and Stettin. It played an important role in the conquest and settlement of Barnim by the Ascanian margraves in the 13th century. Eberswalde initially played no role. Only with the economic strengthening of the town at the beginning of the 14th century was the route of the army road changed in the direction of Eberswalde by margravial order. In 1936, an approx. 1,250 m long section of paving stones was paved on this part of the Heerstraße in order to open up the main access road to the Schützenkaserne.
