Upper water gate
The third fortress gate is located near the floodgates of the fortress system, hence its name - Upper Water Gate.
It is displayed in front of the brick bridge that spans the fortress moat in close proximity to the Ohře River.
When viewed from the bridge, one can see the central (large) gate for carriages, and the profiles of two passages on the sides. However, one of the passages is fake, and was built only for the optical symmetry of the building.
So the gate actually consists of only two passages, the smaller one being intended for pedestrians and the larger one for carriages. Previously, two drawbridges were part of the gate. The equipment of these drawbridges was simple and practical. By turning the control wheel, the pins of which fitted into the toothed quarter-circle fixed on the bridge, the movable bridge was brought into a vertical position, thereby interrupting the communication link and at the same time closing the entrance to the gate passage.
In the upper part of the gate, water tanks were built for the needs of the city of Terezín, these tanks have long since been unused.
