In the garden, which the residents of Gubbio call the Garden of the Monks, stands the sculpture representing the miracle of Francis and the wolf.

Here is the monumental church of San Francesco with the adjacent monastery. The building was constructed in 1255, but work continued for several decades and the church was not completed until 1291. According to legend, the saint from Assisi found refuge and protection here at the beginning of the 13th century after leaving his father's house, and it is also here, according to legend, that he wore his habit for the first time.

At the monument of St. Francis with the wolf, the visitor is reminded of the legend that is said to have happened near the town of Gubbio in the 14th century. A huge wolf is said to have lived here, which devoured not only animals but also people, so that hardly anyone dared to leave the city walls unarmed. St. Francis took pity on the residents and decided to confront the wolf. The citizens said to him: “Be careful, Brother Franz, to leave the city gate, the wolf, who has already eaten many, will kill you too!” But the saint placed his hope in the Lord Jesus and walked under the protection of the cross with a companion in front of the city gate and towards the wolf. The residents watched as the wolf ran towards him with its mouth open and Francis made the sign of the cross over him and the divine power tamed the wolf. He suddenly stopped and his throat closed. Francis addressed him with the words: “Come to me, Brother Wolf! In the name of Christ I command you not to harm me or anyone else anymore.” The wolf then lay down at his feet like a lamb.
