The monument depicts Josef František Smetana (1801 to 1861). The naturalist and historian taught at the Pilsen Gymnasium. He was an older cousin of Bedřich Smetana, who called him "uncle". J. F. Smetana was a key political, cultural, and scientific figure of the Czech National Revival in Pilsen. The bronze statue was unveiled on November 12, 1874.

Josef František Smetana, baptized František (March 24, 1801 – February 18, 1861), was a naturalist, historian, member of the Premonstratensian monastery of Teplá, doctor of philosophy, professor of the Pilsen Gymnasium. He was the older cousin of Bedřich Smetana, who called him "uncle".
Josef František Smetana was the author of the first book on astronomy written in Czech and was therefore instrumental in popularizing astronomy during the national revival. He became a key figure in the political, cultural and scientific life of the Czech national uprising in Pilsen.
