Too much eroticism for the town hall square in Saarbrücken...
Today no one would raise an eyebrow at the white marble statue at the foot of the trill staircase. "But at the beginning of the last century there was a lot of irritation because of it," says Marcel Wainstock, a Saarbrücken resident by choice and former manager of the Saar synagogue community.
But what is wrong with the artwork?
"The statue represents Telemachus girding on a sword," says Wainstock. It's not heartwarming yet. But now it comes:
"Telemach is stark naked except for a helmet." That could become a problem, especially in the prudish Prussia of 1902. Especially since he used to outrage many more people with his nudity. He didn't stand aside, but adorned a fountain on the town hall square. "Greek legendary hero or not, he was a thorn in the side of the citizens of Saarbrücken who were concerned about morality," says Wainstock, describing the reactions to the construction of the fountain.
No sooner had Odysseus' son woken up in front of the town hall than there were loud protests. The St. Johann-Saarbrücker Volkszeitung reported on June 4, 1902 that the statue was "very disapprovingly discussed in all 41 sections of the population" and that the children were also worried.
Nevertheless, Telemach stayed, at least until the National Socialists came to power. They had the fountain and the naked Greek demolished in 1936, officially due to limited space for their marches in front of the town hall.
Only in the 1960s did the Telemachus appear in the Stadtgarten. There he was unsupervised, lost his manhood, a lower leg, even his head. On the soup alley steps, nobody takes offense at him anymore. Even if it were still complete – today hardly anyone would be bothered by its nakedness.
