The great storm surge on February 16, 1962 was an event that left its mark like no other post-war Hamburg event. In the middle of the night, a huge tidal wave rolled up the Elbe from the North Sea towards the Hanseatic city, destroyed the dykes and cost the lives of 315 people in Hamburg. Thousands lost their belongings or became homeless.
