A memorial to the memory of the first steam engine built in Germany can be found on the stockpile of the former König-Friedrich shaft southeast of Hettstedt. It consists of a granite block with two bronze tablets and a foundation made of colored sandstone and granite slabs. The steam engine, which was put into operation on the König-Friedrich-Schacht on August 23, 1785, was used to drain the shaft systems. In honor of this event, the Association of German Engineers had the machine monument donated there erected there. It was unveiled and inaugurated on August 20, 1890.

It's actually quite a desolate area - but of course the place is still historically important and therefore you can visit it sometimes...
