This was once a working gauge house for Rijkswaterstaat. From 1874 onwards, Rijkswaterstaat measured the ebb and flow levels at 75 places along the Dutch coast. This was done with so-called gauge markers, which were set up in houses such as this one in Steenbergse Sas. (Source: bhic)
