A visit to the restored Fort Henricus is a step back in time. This fort was part of the West Brabant Waterline and the Southern Waterline. It defended the city and port of Steenbergen and the inundation lock. Climb the lookout tower 'de Liniekijker' on the fort! From here you have a fantastic view of the star-shaped fort and the vast polders of West Brabant.

Historical significance: Fort Henricus in Steenbergen could accommodate up to 450 soldiers. With 11.5 hectares, this Hendrik was one of the largest forts in the Southwest of the Dutch Republic! Fort Henricus was recently renovated, so that hikers and water sports enthusiasts can browse and relax to their heart's content. Climb the lookout tower at the entrance to the fort and enjoy the view of the most beautiful spot on the Vliet!

A plaything between the Spanish troops and the Dutch, that was Steenbergen. Time and again, the fortified town was conquered and plundered. Until 1627, because from then on Fort Henricus in Steenbergen protected the harbour and the lock. That lock was important for the inundation. The hornworks, bastions and moat of Fort Henricus made Steenbergen an impregnable fortress. In 1809, Napoleon prepared his cannons for the last time, out of fear of a British invasion. Fort Henricus was demolished shortly afterwards.

      History
From 1627 to 1816, Fort Henricus protected the fortified town of Steenbergen (North Brabant). Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik, son of William of Orange, was the builder of this fort in the West Brabant Waterline and Southern Waterline (which lay between Bergen op Zoom and Grave). In 1628, the line was flooded for the first time. This is called inundation. Along the edges of the Steenbergse Vliet, the tides had free rein thanks to an open connection with the sea. Cannons were ready on the fort to repel the enemy. Thanks to the success of the line, it never got that far. In recent years, we have restored Fort Henricus with its five bastions. It looks as much as possible like it did in the seventeenth century.
