Hiking

The Niederberg town of Wülfrath is located in the largest limestone mining area in Europe. Starting from Wülfrath, you can hike along the disused Schlupkothen quarry. From 1898 to 1960, over 45 million tons of limestone were mined here. Today the Schlupkothen quarry is filled with clear water. There is a viewing platform and there are always beautiful views of the quarry.

The hike is about 7.3 km long and one of the beautiful Neanderland STEIG discovery loops, see neanderland.de/aktiv-erleben/wandern/der-neanderland-steig/discovererschleifen.

Hiking

Walkers and hikers experience the disused Schlupkothen quarry, which has been reclaimed by nature. The rugged cliffs and the turquoise-green water of the groundwater lake are fascinating. If you're lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of eagle owls nesting in the quarry wall. Remains of old industrial facilities are reminiscent of the former limestone extraction. Those interested can stand directly above the water on a viewing platform. A natural and industrial history trail leads around the quarry. It is recommended to walk around this on the way back.
