More than 760 years ago, the Cistercians in the Salvey Valley began using water power to grind grain and saw wood. Over the centuries, a chain of five mills with their ponds has emerged that characterizes the landscape.

The Salvey Mill 3 is and was something special among the mills in the Salvey Valley, because it was both a grinding mill and a sawmill. The beams for many a house were sawn from the trees in the region. The saw was powered by a Francis turbine - a rarity that can be seen across Germany. It set the transmission mechanisms in motion or generated electricity by means of a generator. The ensemble of Salvey Mill 3 is now a listed building.

The Salvey Mill 3 is the last of the former 5 mills on the Salveybach.

In January 2021, we from Studio ZaZa took over the mill as a family business and will continue to run it from now on with a lot of love. Our vision is to create an exciting and changeable urban place in the middle of nature. This place offers space and opportunities for a wide variety of ideas, and evolves with the needs of the time and users. Aesthetics, design, tranquility, nature and sustainability are our core themes.

The watermill stands on a site that was established by the Cistercians over 750 years ago. It is the last remaining mill of the former four mills of the Salveybach and is located in a historically created pond landscape.

In order to be able to recreate the life of the mill at that time, a technology museum was built in the rooms of the mill. The old mill inventory can be viewed here. The exhibition provides information about the time when the Salveymühle was built until today. The very special thing about the Salvey Mühle was its horizontal saw powered by water power via the turbine. The saw frame as well as the transmission can be experienced in operation.

In the upper rooms and on the outside area there is also the opportunity to find out more about renewable energy. For those who want to stay longer, the mill offers ecological and beautifully designed holiday apartments, single and double rooms as well as bicycle accommodation.
