The monument to Friedrich II commemorates his services to the draining of the Oderbruch and has an eventful history. The bronze statue was erected in Letschin, one of the largest towns in the Oderbruch, in 1905 and dismantled after the Second World War. The monument was supposed to be scrapped as a "symbol of the exploiting class", but the scrap dealers in Frankfurt and Luckenwalde refused. So the citizens of Letschin got their Fritz back and set it up. The police came that night and took him down again, it went like that a couple of times. Eventually, some citizens hid the statue in a shed behind cucumber barrels. It was stored there until the 1980s and fell into oblivion. In its place was a memorial for fallen soldiers of the Red Army. After the fall of communism in 1990, the restored statue was given its present place again.
