Saint Gertrude is the patron saint of hospitals. She is also the patroness of the poor and widows, of innkeepers, of pilgrims, travelers and road users; and of garden and field fruits. She is invoked against rat and mouse plagues. She is depicted as a Benedictine abbess, with a cross, chalice, cats, mice and/or spiders.
