Espelkamp is located in the north-east of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the north of East Westphalia-Lippe and in the north-west of the Minden-Lübbecke district. In terms of culture, Espelkamp is in the Mindener Land or Lübbecke Land. The nearest major cities are Osnabrück (40 km to the south-west) and Bielefeld (40 km to the south) and the district town of Minden (20 km to the east).

The urban area is around 15 km north of the Wiehengebirge and completely in the North German Plain. The area is therefore largely flat; there are no prominent mountains. The hill in Fabbenstedt, which barely towers over its surroundings, is the highest point in the city at almost 70 meters. Otherwise, the urban area is on average at an altitude of around 45 meters, individual areas in the north-west of the city on the Große Aue are only just over 40 meters. Espelkamp is still in the old moraine area of Rahden-Diepenauer Geest - a natural sub-unit of the Dümmer-Geest lowlands.

The urban area is bounded in the south by the Mittelland Canal, which has been running through the glacial valley of the Weser north of the Bastau since 1915. Moors such as the Großes Torfmoor upland moor belonging to Lübbecke can be found in this lowland. In the Espelkamp urban area, the low moor Altes Moor and the Freimoor in the south-east of the urban area should be emphasized. In the northern city area and in the moor lowlands in the east, the area is drained by numerous drainage canals. The largest "classic" rivers in the urban area include the Große Aue, which flows through the urban area in the west from south to north, and its tributary, the Kleine Aue, which has its source near Espelkamp-Isenstedt and flows through the urban area in a northerly direction. Another large tributary of the Great Aue, the Wiekriede, has its source near Frotheim, which leaves the city area to the north-east in the direction of Diepenau. The urban area thus belongs entirely to the catchment area of the Weser. There are two dammed lakes on the Große Aue west of the Espelkamper center: the Große Auesee and the Badesee See am Klei Hügel. In the city center is the Gabelweiher.

Nice little town with a green center, delicious ice cream parlors and some kebab shops 😉
