The first documented entries date back to 1242. The name comes from the Low German "Isenstiee" and means "iron place". On January 1, 1973, Isenstedt was incorporated into Espelkamp. A part of the area with just over 100 inhabitants was awarded to Lübbecke.[2] In 2008, the village took part in the "Our Village Has a Future" competition.
