The mouth of the Elbe has great importance for shipping, as the funnel forms the entrance to the port of Hamburg and the mouth of the Kiel Canal lies at the mouth on the northern side (at Brunsbüttel). The lower part of the Elbe estuary is therefore one of the busiest waterways in Europe.

The Grimmershörnbucht with its crescent-shaped arch from the ferry port to the Kugelbake is perhaps the geographically most distinctive place in Cuxhaven.
