Initially, Meerle belonged to the Sint-Remigius parish in Baarle. The patronage of this parish belonged to Thorn Abbey. In 1261 there was a subsidiary church of this parish in Meerle. It was not until the second half of the 14th century that Meerle became an independent parish, the patronage of which remained in the hands of Thorn Abbey until 1796.

There used to be a Romanesque church here, probably built in the 13th century, the foundations of which were uncovered in 1970. In the 15th century a Gothic church was built of which the tower, nave and transept still exist. At the beginning of the 16th century, the church was enlarged, of which Rombout II Keldermans was the master builder. In 1526-1529 the choir and a new transept were completed behind the old transept.

The religious disputes at the end of the 16th century led to the decline of the church, but from the second half of the 17th century it started to flourish again, although the church was heavily damaged by a storm in 1717.
