The Dillenburg casemates were among the largest defenses in Western Europe from the early modern period (15th / 16th centuries). A defense system was created with bulwarks, casemates and battlements,
that made the "Dillenburg" impregnable.

Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed after the 7-year war and the defenses were filled in for fear of another siege.
More than 2 km of the battlements that were once more than 10 km long have been excavated so far.
Part of the multi-storey facility can be visited on a 45-minute tour.
In addition to the museum in the green villa and the Wilhelmsturm, the casemates are absolutely worth seeing!

The Wilhelmsturm on the Schlossberg is today considered the official landmark of Dillenburg. The tower was built in 1875, today serves as a viewing platform and houses the Oranien-Nassau Museum with numerous exhibits from the Nassau family. If you are on the Rothaarsteig, you can see from the Wilhelmsturm what is in store for him (and what he has already left behind).
