In the old village center of present-day Kranjska Gora stands the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The church, as we see it today, was built between 1510 and 1520; only the Romanesque bell tower remains. The architect of the church was Bartholomäus Viertaler, and his ideas were implemented by the master builder Jernej Firtaler from Villach.

The church has a cruciform floor plan. It consists of a nave, a presbytery with the Gothic main altar of the Assumption and the Apostles, a work by the Cranno painter Leopold Laye, and two side chapels.

A Baroque pulpit and baptismal font are located along the triumphal wall. The choir and organ are supported by columns of Persian tuff. The sanctuary and chapels were painted in 1904 by the painter and fresco artist Matija Bradaška. The altarpieces in the side altars are also his work. The crowning glory of the whole is the beautiful star vault with floral motifs that adorns the sanctuary and the nave.

In front of the church are busts of Josip Lavtižar, Simon Robič, and Lovrenec Lavtižar, important figures in the Zgornjesavska Valley.

It is said that a church existed in Kranjska Gora very early on. It was called Our Lady of the White Gravel. All that remains of the original church is a sandstone bell tower in the Romanesque style.
The present church is a late Gothic building, built in 1510. It was commissioned by the master craftsman Jernej Firtaler from Villach. The Carinthian influence is particularly evident in the transverse vault, which leans against the interior supports; it is decorated with a decorative ribbed interlacing and is one of the most interesting examples of such interlacing in Slovenia.
