The stately church with its 64.5 m high tower rises imposingly over the town. It is the largest church of its kind in the Chemnitz administrative district and one of the most important in Saxony.
After a devastating town fire in 1862, which razed the old Oswald Church to the ground, the town church was rebuilt from 1864 to 1868 according to plans by Oskar Sommer as a three-nave neo-Romanesque hall church.
