The Eibenstock dam is the largest drinking water dam in Saxony. It is also affectionately known locally as “The Giant Barrel of Eibenstock”. The dam supplies the Chemnitz and Zwickau area with drinking water. It also has an important function for flood protection in the region and increases the water level of the Zwickauer Mulde during dry periods. A hydroelectric power plant ensures environmentally friendly energy generation. The dam was built between 1974 and 1987. To achieve this, the village of Muldenhammer and a few hamlets had to be relocated and a railway line had to be closed. With the steep Eibenstock line, Saxony lost its only standard-gauge railway, which could handle enormous gradients of up to 1:20.Although the dam was only completed in 1984 and the entire system in 1987, the dam was put into operation in 1982. The test jam even began in 1980.
