Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V Z6672 ZA-Y of 10 Squadron was shot down here on 19 August 1941. The Whitley was on its way to Köln but was hit by a night fighter, the damaged aircraft still managed to drop its bombs on Aachen, DE. After this bombing and during the return to England the aircraft was hit a second time, this time by Oblt Heinrich Griese of the 1./NJG 1. This attack was fatal to the Whitley.

The memorial is located on the Tiendenberg and was inaugurated on August 19, 1999 by W/O Norman WEISER of the 10 Squadron. Bagpiper Raymond BROUNS led the way to the ceremony and F-16s from Kleine Brogel flew over the monument. The proposal to erect the monument came from the South Limburg WWII commemoration committee. Jacky COMHAIR came up with the idea of placing the RAF cocarde on the memorial. Sgt. Steve ROBERTS (RAF) and members of the committee built the brick memorial on the very scenic site. The commemorative plaques were donated by Glons air force personnel and Paul DAEMEN made the land available. In May 2002, Paul, Timmy and Dominique DAEMEN made a concrete border around the monument so that it was better protected.

A moment of attention and silence during a sad event during the war... Striking because of its shape and color...
