On August 18, 1914 - the Germans had only just invaded Belgium - Lummen was hit by a huge fire. The reason was said to have been a shooting at a group of German scouts. The event at the start of WWI immediately left its mark on Lummen and would continue to mark the municipality for many years, even after the war. As many as 63 houses were completely reduced to ashes during the devastation. The destruction was so extensive that now only one house from that period remains on Lummen's Municipal Square. People took refuge en masse in the direction of the Burg, Loye and Het Hamel castles. The area around Lummen center also fell prey to the destruction of the occupying forces. Houses and extraction sites were set on fire.
