Dolný Kubín is one of the main towns of the Orava region and a great starting point for cyclists exploring the Slovak part of the Carpathians. Situated on the Orava River, the town offers a beautiful centre with a pedestrian zone and a historic bridge, as well as numerous shops and accommodation options. The Orava Museum and the castle in nearby Oravský Podzámok are worth a visit. The access to Dolný Kubín leads through picturesque valleys and well-maintained roads, also suitable for trekking bikes. It is a good place to spend the night or regenerate before continuing your route through the mountains or towards Liptov.

A grown-up Slovak town. It was founded some 750 years ago and once the Orava Castle (Oravský Hrad) started losing importance, it became the centre of Orava in the 17th century. This century wasn't much better for the town as it brought wars, fires, poverty. This town has always been predominantly Slovak with a significant (about one fourth) Jewish community, except for the administration which was almost purely Hungarian - which means the Hungarians who came to live here from the outside but also Slovaks who decided to declare themselves Hungarian.
Dolný Kubín was one of the centres of the Slovak National Revival in the 19th century, a mental revolution that was a reaction to the forced Magyarization. The whole process became fruitful only in 1918 when independent Czechoslovakia was created.

In the centre, by the Orava River, there are two interesting churches (Roman-Catholic and Protestant), the Čaplovič Library, one of the best of Slovakia, with some 85.000 valuable books.
Dolný Kubín was also home for Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, 19/20th century Slovak writer, extremely important for the Slovak national identity.
