    St. John's Church, Tafers
St. John's Church (Taufers im Münstertal)
The St. John's Church in Taufers im Münstertal (South Tyrol) is probably one of the oldest, if not the oldest building that still stands in the village today, at least in its rudiments.
The origins of the church go back to the 9th century, when it was part of a Benedictine monastery that was destroyed around 1130. From 1300, parts of the church were used for the attached hospice of the Order of St. John. The church is best known for the fresco of St. Christopher on the north side, the oldest image of St. Christopher in Tyrol (early 13th century). The structure is also unusual as a central building in the shape of a Greek cross. In front of this is a double, two-story vestibule on the west side. The main facade with a three-stage flat-arch portal is on the western side wing.
Romanesque frescoes in the presbytery (south wall and vaulted ceiling) show, among other things, the baptism of Christ, Moses as lawgiver, surrounded by Jews who can be recognized by their headgear, Christ between Mary and John, as well as numerous abbots, princes, knights and writing church teachers. On the upper floor of the vestibule there is a Gothic fresco layer (including the beheading of John the Baptist, St. Ursula and Catherine, Christ in a loincloth, end of the 14th century)

The St. John's Church in Taufers was built around 1220. The Romanesque church building has the shape of a Greek cross. The completely painted groin vault shows Byzantine influences, and the late Romanesque frescoes are also worth seeing. Whole sections of the walls of the previous church from the 9th century were used to build the church. The church was later used as a hospice church and served as a lounge and sleeping place for pilgrims.
