Holy Cross Chapel, St. John's Monastery, Müstair
    Holy Cross Chapel, Müstair
The Holy Cross Chapel in the Graubünden town of Müstair is one of the most outstanding sacred buildings of Carolingian architecture in Europe. The two-storey church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 along with the other monastery buildings of the Benedictine monastery of St. John.
The monastery of Müstair was founded between 774 and 778 - probably on the orders of Charlemagne, but at least with his consent - by the Bishop of Chur, and the Holy Cross Chapel also dates from this period, according to reliable dendrochronological findings. Accordingly, the eastern part of the ceiling, which divides the upper floor from the lower floor, is the oldest (preserved) beamed ceiling in Europe. In the course of a comprehensive restoration project that has been ongoing since 2011, Carolingian frescoes and fresco remains were discovered inside the upper church, which also support a dating of the current chapel to the last quarter of the 8th century.
Recent excavation findings show that a predecessor building of roughly the same size and width, but without side apses, stood on the site of the current chapel - this could have been a single-storey chapel building that served as a place of worship for the monks and construction workers involved in the construction of the monastery and the monastery church. This chapel would then have been expanded in the 8th century to form the current two-storey, three-apsidial building.
